- Shelley: I'm not sure why I want to do service
- I've gotten stuck on "why" and never gotten to "what"
- Part of it is hanging out with people in my "core community" while doing service
- Meg: Also connecting to the wider community where you live
- Gus: Silverton Grange community garden program
- Coordinating a number of gardens
- Food goes to community aid organization, SACA
- Laura: Service should be both enjoyable and meaningful
- Ex. already planning to run a marathon, got sponsors
- Diego: Otherwise it won't be sustainable
- Lyric: Give your passion
- Ex. programming service projects if you're a programmer
- Brandon: But you might feel like connecting with something other than your profession
- Molly: Passion vs. obligation
- Gus: Don't get too focused on process
- Summer festival org lost track of "why are we doing this?"
- Gus: Where can you put your resources that will have the most impact?
- Why aren't we doing more?
- Gus: Burnout
- Meg: I only do stuff related to the school where I teach
- Shelley: SolSeed "doesn't count"
- Does work count?
- Lyric: Can you make it count?
- Heather: If I'm making money at something, it feels like it's not righteous/sacrificial enough
- Brandon: When there's money involved, it changes my motivations and my options (how can I make enough to support myself?)
- Does family count?
- Laura: Time vs. timing (fitting it into your schedule)
- Meg: Could have a one-time service event
- Shelley: Finding something kids can participate in is hard
- Ideas:
- Gus: Living history project: old people telling kids the stories of their youth
- Shelley: Nursing Mothers Association "Mommy Moments" cell phone forwarding for breastfeeding issues
- Homeless populations in Portland
- Meg: I don't want to give money directly because it coud support drug use
- Serving food instead
- Use unused land, pick fruit from public trees
- Brandon: Hands On Portland projects
- Gus: gleaners (harvesting what the actual harvesters miss)
- Ben: Arboretum or similar place
- Shelley: Cutting ivy that's eating the trees
- Trail maintenance, trash cleenup
- Meg: Mt. Tabor & Tryon Creek State Park work parties
- Molly: teaching English to day laborers
