Notes

  • Shelley: I'm not sure why I want to do service
    • I've gotten stuck on "why" and never gotten to "what"
    • Part of it is hanging out with people in my "core community" while doing service
      • Meg: Also connecting to the wider community where you live
  • Gus: Silverton Grange community garden program
    • Coordinating a number of gardens
    • Food goes to community aid organization, SACA
  • Laura: Service should be both enjoyable and meaningful
    • Ex. already planning to run a marathon, got sponsors
    • Diego: Otherwise it won't be sustainable
    • Lyric: Give your passion
      • Ex. programming service projects if you're a programmer
      • Brandon: But you might feel like connecting with something other than your profession
      • Molly: Passion vs. obligation
  • Gus: Don't get too focused on process

  • Gus: Where can you put your resources that will have the most impact?
  • Why aren't we doing more?
    • Gus: Burnout
    • Meg: I only do stuff related to the school where I teach
    • Shelley: SolSeed "doesn't count"
    • Does work count?
      • Lyric: Can you make it count?
      • Heather: If I'm making money at something, it feels like it's not righteous/sacrificial enough
      • Brandon: When there's money involved, it changes my motivations and my options (how can I make enough to support myself?)
    • Does family count?
    • Laura: Time vs. timing (fitting it into your schedule)
      • Meg: Could have a one-time service event
